President Trump tweeted on Friday that tariffs on Mexican goods are “indefinitely suspended” after negotiators reached a deal to stop the illegal flow of migrants into the U.S.
“I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico,” Trump tweeted. “The tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday against Mexico are hereby indefinitely suspended. Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to stem the tide of migration through Mexico and to our Southern Border.”
In a statement released Friday night, the State Department said that both sides would take actions to stem the flow of migrants. Mexico will deploy its national guard throughout the country, with particular attention to its Southern border with Guatemala. Mexico has also agreed to take “decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks.” The U.S. will “immediately expand” the implementation of existing protocols across the entire Southern border, and any individuals crossing from Mexico into the U.S. seeking asylum “will be rapidly returned to Mexico where they may await the adjudication of their asylum claims.” Mexican officials have agreed to offer jobs, education, and health care to those migrants, and, in return, the U.S. will expedite the asylum adjudication process.
