DECEMBER 2024

The Monthly Horizon

Monthly Recap

The logistics industry faces significant uncertainty heading into 2025, with a potential East Coast port strike on January 15, looming tariff hikes, and regulatory changes. December has seen steep rate increases driven by tight vessel space, an early Lunar New Year, and tariff threats, with higher rates and limited capacity expected into January. Recent Canadian port strikes have already slowed shipments to Asia and increased export costs, adding further strain on U.S. trade. Rising Asia-to-U.S. demand has extended the air freight peak season into 2025, driving higher rates and capacity constraints. Despite a freight downturn and declining industrial output, domestic carriers are targeting notable rate increases for 2025, while workforce challenges persist across trucking and logistics operations.

Compliance Recap

U.S.-China tensions have shifted to export controls, with China issuing a dual-use items control list similar to the U.S. Commerce Control List. In response, the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) tightened controls on high-bandwidth memory modules and semiconductor manufacturing equipment and expanded its Entity List. For further insights, Compliance Director Kristen Morneau has published two articles this month.
