Welcome to 2026. As Chinese New Year approaches on February 17, shipping rates are rising as demand increases against tightening capacity, particularly on eastbound transpacific trade lanes, where already reduced ocean and air capacity continues to drive rates higher. In contrast, transatlantic (ex-Europe) lanes remain relatively stable despite minor transshipment delays via European ports from the Indian Subcontinent. Looking ahead, ocean carrier contract negotiations for 2026 are already underway, though most BCO agreements are not expected to be finalized until late March or early April.
As we move further into 2026, the industry continues to await the Supreme Court’s highly anticipated IEEPA tariff ruling, which could come as early as next week or as late as mid-summer and is expected to trigger significant downstream impacts for importers. As January comes to a close, threats of new tariffs remain, though there is temporary relief regarding Europe through February 1. Proposed tariff increases throughout the EU and on French wines have been set aside for now, but tariffs on those doing business with Iran and Canada (regarding trade with China) still linger. February also anticipates a 10% increase to the 15% reciprocal rate on South Korea, due to its failure to meet the terms of the pending trade agreement. Formal notices have not yet been issued, with two days remaining.
The ability to accept refunds from U.S. Customs is dependent on having an ACH account connected to an ACE portal account no later than February 6. At a time when importers are closely monitoring their entries and seeking the ability to make corrections, establishing the ACE portal ACH connection is essential. Attention remains on the Supreme Court for a ruling on the premise of IEEPA tariffs issued over 2025. Connecting your ACH account is an early step importers should take in anticipation of potential refunds. Access to the ACE portal will also support the review of your import history.
