As we await further details on recent presidential actions, we are seeing increased examination and handling times across several Partner Government Agencies (PGAs) that work with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), amid ongoing staffing uncertainties. We will continue to closely monitor these developments and their impact on the supply chain.
This past week, President Trump issued a memorandum known as the “Fair and Reciprocal Plan,” aimed at addressing trade imbalances with U.S. trading partners. The directive calls for a review of foreign tariffs, value-added taxes, non-tariff barriers, and other trade practices, with the potential for reciprocal measures. Examples highlighted by the White House include the U.S. imposing a 2.5% tariff on ethanol while Brazil charges 18%, a U.S. average applied Most Favored Nation (MFN) tariff of 5% on agricultural goods compared to India’s 39%, and the EU’s ban on shellfish imports from 48 U.S. states.
