The Weekly Current

General

With the U.S. presidential election now behind us, OCEANAIR is looking to the future and preparing for potential shifts in U.S. tariff policies and the rescheduled ILA strike, now anticipated for January 15, 2025. In an ever-evolving supply chain landscape, staying informed and ready for rapid changes is essential for both OCEANAIR and our customers.

Compliance

In the past week, U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) actions involving Russian sanctions violations have increased. Today, Ilya Khan pleaded guilty to transferring dual-use semiconductors to sanctioned Russian entities. Last week, Eleview International and two executives faced charges for similar violations. These cases underscore the effectiveness of BIS’s transshipment investigations.

Ocean

The Canadian ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert have been shut down effective Monday, November 4. Several vessels are currently at anchor awaiting a quick resolution; if the closure persists, cargo may be diverted to already overburdened U.S. West Coast ports.

The U.S. export freight forwarding industry is also grappling with challenges following the recent ILA strike, which briefly interrupted port operations and increased shipping costs. Meanwhile, upcoming carrier alliance restructuring is expected to reshape the logistics landscape, potentially enhancing efficiency while complicating negotiations.

Ground

The number of northbound trucks crossing the U.S.-Mexico border rose 4.4% in September from a year ago, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
