From an import perspective, the 10% reduction in the IEEPA tariffs did go into effect on Monday. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered a 10% reduction in flights at 40 major U.S. airports while the government shut down continues. This will potentially tighten air cargo networks as the holiday season begins. This move, combined with FedEx and UPS grounding their McDonnell Douglas MD-11 fleets following a fatal crash in Louisville, threatens to strain shipping capacity during peak demand. There is the possibility of bottlenecks, increased transit times, and higher spot prices as capacity tightens.
The CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, a 17,859 TEU ultra-large container vessel, has become the first ship of its size to safely transit the Red Sea in nearly two years, following disruptions caused by Houthi rebel attacks on commercial vessels. Two other CMA CGM ships — Zheng He and Jules Verne — are also heading toward the region, though it is too soon to view this as a full-scale return to the Suez Canal route, as risks to vessels remain high. These transits aim to reduce turnaround times and reposition empty containers to Asia faster, with any future east-to-west voyage through the Red Sea considered a significant milestone. Since 2023, many shipping lines have rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the conflict-affected Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
