The OCEANAIR Current

JULY 17, 2025

The Weekly Current

General / Compliance

August 1 is shaping up to be a pivotal day for U.S. importers. A number of proposed tariff increases are expected to take effect, including:

  • 50% tariffs on copper
  • 30% tariffs on goods from the EU and Mexico
  • 50% tariffs on goods from Brazil
  • Increases on many countries currently subject to 10% reciprocal tariffs

At this time, these changes have not been finalized, and specific implementation details remain unknown. However, we anticipate many of the proposals will be enacted in full. We are closely monitoring updates from the White House and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and will share detailed guidance as soon as confirmation is received.

Looking ahead, under President Trump, CBP has indicated that import enforcement will remain a top priority. On the export side, the International Trade Administration’s (ITA) proposed 2026 budget includes increased funding for its Enforcement and Compliance divisions—signaling a stronger emphasis on export regulation enforcement as well.
