The OCEANAIR Current

DECEMBER 6, 2024

The Weekly Current

General

As logistics professionals, it is in our nature to schedule, prepare, and have contingency plans in place to reduce as much uncertainty as possible. Our industry is continuously changing, yet we require accurate and up-to-date information across a vast variety of data to keep goods flowing as efficiently as possible.

Currently, we are in unprecedented territory and face more uncertainty over the next two months than ever before. A possible East Coast port strike on January 15, 2025, extensive tariff increases that could go into effect as early as January 20, regulation changes, and retaliatory trade actions are all on the horizon.

OCEANAIR’s logistics experts are engaged with U.S. government agencies and industry organizations to understand and react to these changes as they happen in real time. OCEANAIR will continue to keep our clients informed and updated as speculation surrounding these events turns into official actions.

Compliance

President-elect Trump has selected former U.S. Border Patrol Chief Rodney S. Scott as the nominee for Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), along with Caleb Vitello for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Tony Salisbury as Deputy Homeland Security Advisor.

Scott, who previously served as Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector, has held multiple roles within CBP. He is noted for his leadership during the implementation of policies such as “Remain in Mexico” and Title 42 during the prior Trump administration. CBP, with over 60,000 agents, is responsible for managing the movement of people and cargo through U.S. ports of entry.

Ground

U.S. less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments, tonnage, and revenue are declining in the fourth quarter, driven by weak U.S. industrial output. Despite these challenges, carriers remain determined to pursue high single-digit rate increases for their 2025 freight bids.
