Knock on wood, snap a wishbone…it’s been a quiet week for trade announcements, but Friday has a shady reputation. The quiet is much needed as importers and brokers digest the impact of the country-by-country Section 301 tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, with exclusions that differ from the existing China Section 301 measures. Many are also working through the kinks of the CPSC e-filing requirements following CBP’s comments that enforcement will be swift, with no soft rollout. Seasonal importers need to be prepared for these requirements, particularly for toys, where nearly all products require some form of testing to be on file. New Section 232 measures for the pharmaceutical sector, with varying product lists, are also easing into practice.

Global jet fuel prices surged more than 37% between late June and late July, rising from $116.63 to $160.06 per barrel, as the end of U.S.-Iran peace talks reversed a two-month decline in fuel costs. Airlines are beginning to pass these higher fuel costs on to customers through increased fuel surcharges. These adjustments signal that rising jet fuel costs are expected to increase air cargo shipping expenses in the coming weeks.

The Rhine River in Germany is experiencing critically low water levels due to a heatwave and prolonged dry weather. While cargo vessels continue operating, they can carry only about 20% of their normal loads, forcing companies to utilize additional ships to move the same amount of cargo. This situation will lead to increased surcharges and shipment delays due to equipment and capacity constraints.
